IISD Students’ Database

The computer languages always fancied me, I loved thinking of useful software/apps when I was a kid!

Now that I’ve grown up, the zeal for learning the various languages like C++, PHP, Java, VB has gained vigour and momentum. Everyday since then I’ve been surfing the net and reading reviews about all kinds of software and applications used in Defence, Aviation, Tourism, Automobiles, etc. and discussed with my school friends and teachers about them.

One such day (the results day of my 11th grade), while the teacher was distributing the Report Card, this struck my mind – “When will the schools adopt latest technologies and leave behind the age old method of calculating the marks and writing them down on paper manually?”. I then thought of automising the entire system of marking and grading in IISD.

And, just after a week or so Wasif gave me a thick book on ‘Visual Basic’ published by Tata McGraw Hill. I began browsing through it and I found it very similar to the C++ I had been learning at school.

We then decided to make a software application using VB and MS Access for the school. We still haven’t completed the software, but the work is on!

The software will be very user-friendly where the teacher of a class has to store the students’ names at the beginning of the academic year. The teacher then has to fill in the various fields like ‘Test Marks’,’1st Term Exam Marks’, ‘2nd Term Exam Marks’,’Performance’,’Behaviour’, etc. and the Weightage, Average, Rank, etc. will be calculated automatically and stored in a printer-friendly format.

After finishing with the records of each student, the teacher is just a click away from printing the Reports of each student.

The software won’t be limited to just producing Mark Sheets but it will also serve as a Students Database which if setup on paper will require a large space! And from this database, the school can retrieve any information about any student whenever required!

Also, producing TC’s or Bonafides will become easy with such a software installed!

That’s all I can briefly describe about this project.

We’ve talked to the school authorities and they liked it! While some asked what would be the use of such a software when the same thing can be done by hand?

Well, this is what we replied – “What you do in 3-4 hours, you could do it in ONE with our software”!!
